New DBE 3 Program Focus
DBE 3 is working in 44 districts in six provinces. For the final two years of the project DBE3 will focus on implementing an extended program including in-depth whole school training for junior secondary schools (SMP and MTs) in 25 of these districts. A map of all the districts where DBE3 is working can be found on page 16.
These 25 “extension” districts have selected district facilitators to support the planned series of whole school training activities. There are three district facilitators for each of the core curriculum subjects: B. Indonesia, Mathematics, English, Science and Social Studies. You can read more about the training of district facilitators inside.

Teaching Practice in Training of Trainers
A TEAM of national trainers was selected from existing DBE3 trainers and experienced trainers from other programs. These trainers will support DBE3 to roll out whole school training program. At the start of March, these National Trainers were trained over four days in Solo, Central Java. The training was practical and participative and used the same approaches the trainers will use to train district facilitators and tea-chers during the school training.

An important part of the training was the practical teaching in DBE3 schools in Boyolali and Karanganyar. This was a great success with the trainers showing they could effectively apply what they had learned in the training. For example, most of the science lessons included students’ undertaking practical experiments.
On the right you can see Ronika, a student at SMPN 2 Ngemplak, Boyolali doing an experiment on the expansion of liquids, in this case oil and water. Following the experiment, students then wrote reports in their own words about the experiment. You can see a report below written by Siulastri. This is a most important skill and one of the key aims of the DBE3 program, to encourage children to express themselves in their own words.
