  ”Be Pioneers and an Inspiration”
North Sumatra Vice Governor Opens DBE3 ToT in Medan

THE ToT for District Facilitators in North Sumatra at BPPNFI (24-27/3) was opened by Vice Governor of Sumatra Utara, Gatot Pujo Nugroho. In his speech Vice Governor expressed his appreciation and gratitude to DBE3-USAID which has been working in North Sumatra to improve the quality and relevance of education. He hoped that all ToT participants would be DBE3 program pioneers and an inspiration in their districts. “A teacher’s duty is not only teaching students.

A teacher should be a parent, a friend, or a brother/sister to his or her students. A teacher should inspire students and encourage them to learn more so that the students can be better people,” said Pak Gatot. According to Pak Gatot, there should be an effective dialogue between students and teachers in learning.

This can happen through classroom discussions. One-way communication in the classrooms where teachers just lecture their students will only discourage them from expressing their thoughts and ideas. To the ToT participants Pak Gatot said, “The results of this ToT is not for you alone. Share it with you colleagues. Every positive “virus” you get from this ToT should infect those around you.”

Students of SMPN 1 Jogonalan Performing A Play at School Handing Over Ceremony   in Klaten

STUDENTS of SMPN 1 Jogonalan, Klaten, gave a performance at the handover ceremony of 35 schools held on February 27, 2009 at SDN 01 Babadan, Klaten, as the final stage of Education Response Alliance (ERA) between USAID/Indonesia and ConocoPhillips Indonesia to help with reconstruction and rehabilitation of schools in Klaten following the 2006 earthquake in Yogyakarta.

This was not the first time the students had been on stage to perform the drama. They had performed it three times previously during workshops on disaster preparedness in Semarang, Solo and Yogyakarta. This time they performed in front of VIPs from USAID, ConocoPhillips, BP MIGAS, and officials from Kabupaten Klaten, Central Java.

The short play performed by the students focussed on how to prepare for an earthquake and what to do if an earthquake occurs. The messages in the play were given in a simple way, using simple language and actions to teach young people about disaster preparedness.

The students who performed in this event were also involved in developing a handbook on earthquake preparedness ’Siaga Gempa’. The drama they performed was a way of publicizing the contents of the book.

The performance was very well received.
