Teaching Practice in East Java

DURING the training in East Java in May 2009, DBE3 Program Director, Stuart Weston took the opportunity to observe the teaching practice in Tuban and Pasuruan districts.

The pictures below show activities at schools in Tuban and Pasuruan

They used candles as a source of heat. The school principal of SMP1 Tuban observing a Biology class. The students were learning biology outdoors. They were observing the plants movement caused among other things by light and touch.

  2. Pictures 3-6 show how students at SMPN 1 Beji, Pasuruan work in groups to solve problems given by the teacher. Picture 3 shows a student reading a problem and then discussing how to solve it.

  7. Bpk. Abdi, a teacher at SMPN 1 Merakurak, had downloaded some pictures from the Internet and printed them. In the picture he is helping his students arrange the pictures in food chains.

  8. Students at SMPN 2 Gempol learning English in a fun way. The teacher told a story of Timun Mas in English. She then asked students work in group and arrange the pictures according to the story she told them. Later on, students had to retell the story in their own words in English.

Challenging Worksheets
The problem written on a worksheet and shown in this page (picture 6) was created by a teacher to challenge students to think critically. The teacher gave the worksheet to the students.

After the students had worked to solve the problem they had to tell him the answer, then explain how they had solved the problem. By doing this kind of activity, teachers can monitor students’ development and give them help if they need it.

In the next round of training, participants will be trained to make work sheets which challenge students to think.
