To Support Effective Learning, the Principal of MTs Al-Ahliyah Gives Instructional Leadership

SINCE his participation in BTL2 training, the school principal of MTs Al-Ahliyah has been concentrating on efforts to make the teaching in the school more effective. Each school policy is focused on improving the quality of learning. A. Hidayaturrahman, the principal of MTs Al-Ahliyyah, uses instructional leadership, leadership activities orientated towards improving teaching and learning. The pictures on this page show lessons at MTs Al-Ahliyyah, Kotabaru, Karawang.

A. Hidayaturrahman (pak Ayat) is presenting his policies to all staff and teachers at MTs Al-Ahliyyah. At every meeting pak Ayat explains and reminds them about these policies.

Istiqomah motivates her students through various strategies and activities. Students are having fun playing a game with Istiqomah. This game is intended to improve students’ vocabulary.

Students are given an opportunity to present their work. Using English, these two students explained the results of their group’s discussion to the other students.

At the end of the presentation session, the teacher gives feedback to each group: how they presented materials and how well they answered and responded to questions. Teachers need to be careful in giving the feedback in order to avoid judging students’ opinions.

Sometimes pak Ayat come to the classrooms to explain his policy and make sure lessons are effective. Class visits and observations have become part of his routine as the principal of MTs Al-Ahliyah.

Students work together having discussions in their small groups. In this picture, they are asked to identify and describe objects and animals in English.

These students are receiving feedback from their classmates after they presented their group’s work. All students are encouraged to give their feedback. This session is conducted in English.

Just like Istiqomah, other teachers at MTs Al-Ahliyyah also implement active learning. With support from principal, they keep looking fornew and effective ways to improve their lessons.

Teachers also conduct lesson outside the classroom. There are several reasons why this should be done. First, it creates a new learning environment. Second, this is a chance for students to take advantage of learning resources around the schoolyard. Third, students have more space to move about and do their activities.
