Replication and Change

SMP I Karangpandan students use simple equipment to calculate the speed of the river current.

SOMETHING was different on that morning in the Science class at SMP I Karangpadan. The students gathered together and had discussions on the riverbank located about 50 meters from their school. The students did experiments using simple tools and materials such as rocks, raffia ribbon, wooden rulers and stopwatches to calculate the speed of the river current.
The science teacher, Gatot Surono, S.Pd., says that he has made an effort to implement what he had learnt from BTL 2 (Better Teaching and Learning 2) in the classroom, after he participated in the training. He has already designed lessons for two competency standards using cooperative learning. Displays of students’ work have also made other subject classes more colorful and lively. These improvements have been made possible by the supportive and highly committed School Principal of SMP I Karangpandan, Hanung Lilik Sukendra, S.Pd., M.Pd., MM, who is aiming to improve the quality of learning in his school.
Improvements have been seen not only in SMP I Karangpandan, a school that participated in DBE3 module replication training, but also in other non-target schools.

Active Learning Spreads in MTs NU Banat Kudus
THE MAJORITY of teachers in MTs. Banat Kudus are young female teachers. They often prepare media and worksheets to be used during lessons. The teachers say that the principal is very supportive of the implementation of active learning in the classroom. According to Ibu Layyinah Mawarda, a Social Studies teacher, students enjoy learning in groups. They feel motivated when working in groups.
Another teacher, Ibu Sutikat has used playing cards to help students learn about the 25 apostles during a morals and beliefs lesson in the Islamic Religion class. In the Bahasa Indonesia class, group work encourages students to speak up and not be afraid. Noory Annisa Aulia, a grade 8 student, admits that she enjoys debating with her classmates. She says that by working in groups she gets to know a variety of ideas from her friends and that the different arguments enrich her knowledge.
Another student, Nur Fitri Amalia adds, “If you want something fresh and want to share it among your friends, learn in a group!”
The two students say teachers often use cooperative learning during the semester. Using home-made learning media is nothing new for teachers at MTs NU Banat, though they previously found it difficult to keep students active and engaged.
Through the replication training of the DBE3 foundation module on life skills education, teachers learned new ways to keep students active. “Now cooperative learning model has spread around our madrasah,” adds Ibu Dianah, School Principal of MTs NU Banat.
