MTs NU Al-Hidayah Kudus is Instituionalizing Change

MTs NU Al Hidayah is one of the original DBE3 partner schools in Kudus district. The school is situated in the village of Getas Srabi about 10 Km from the Kudus town. It joined the program in 2006 and has been fully implementing meaningful learning. This can be seen from the seating arrangements in class to the display boards with vibrant displays of students' work. In addition, this madrasah also has language, science, computer and Religion laboratories. Noor Aziz, S. Ag, the principal of MTs NU Al Hidayah, realized that the changes in learning that have happened in the school will not be lasting if there is no effort to institutionalize them.

Pak Noor, as he usually called, said that the school has sought to develop programs that support teachers in implementing development and change in the classroom and has allocated a budget in the school development plan to support them. The school involved the principal, deputy principal for curriculum, student representatives, teachers, and school committee members in preparing the plan,. The plan was drawn up based on a needs analysis proposed by the teacher. For example, a proposal to replicate BTL2 for teachers of non five core subjects was budgeted for and implemented in October 2010. This activity took place to improve learning activities.

1. Students use their work as a learning resource. Students' work is displayed in every classroom.
2. Learning media in MTs NU Al Hidayah are developed by the teachers with the costs covered by the school.
3. The farm and field next to MTs NU Al Hidayah are used for learning too

Recruitment of Facilitators a Sign of District Commitment

THE extension districts of Purworejo, Karanganyar, Boyolali, Kudus and Grobogan have 15 facilitators each. However, as many non partner schools (SMP/MTs) are interested in replicating the program and the governments of those five districts (MoNE, DPRD, Bappeda and MoRA) show a high commitment to sustaining and developing the DBE3 program, more district facilitators are needed.

To fulfil the needs, the district Education Office and MoRA, supported by DBE3 staff, have recruited between 10 and15 additional facilitators in each district through a process of selection and interview. These new facilitators have already participated in BTL (Better Teaching and Learning) 2 and 3 training. The dissemination program in these districts is planned to start in 2011 and last till 2012 and will be fully funded by the district budget.

The new facilitators have also already participated in Becoming an Effective Facilitator training, which was held in October and November 2010. The training was held for teachers/facilitators of the five core subjects: Mathematics, English, Bahasa Indonesia, Science and Social Studies.
